Melassa is a non-profit organization dedicated to the transnational organization of Latin@s in the Americas and those interested in promoting cultural exchange among the Americas. Melassa is dedicated to the development of collaboration projects between academic institutions and popular culture, transcending borders, not only national, but also borders defined by class, gender, and race.
Melassa works from an artistic, cultural, and pedagogic perspective. We count on technical equipment for the production and digital editing of documentaries and the realization of Workshops on Documentation, Technology, Migration, and Culture. All of the activities are carried out from the ethical standpoint of active participation research on the part of community members and workers, professionals, students, teachers and professors from different communities and cities.
In light of the contemporary phenomenon of globalization, Melassa uses visual and electronic communication mediums to create networks of solidarity that go beyond borders, simultaneously forging strong links with local communities. The study of borders, both imaginary and real, helps us to identify the role of Latin@s in the Americas and their representation as historical subjects.
Located in the city of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, the first site colonized by the Spanish, Melassa adopts a trans-local/global vision and provides, in turn, an alternative to the existing mechanisms of global integration by which race, gender and nationality are ideological categories that define power.
Our main objective
is to develop collaborative projects
that document the different Latin@ cultures and communities to achieve a
more balanced regional integration among the Americas.
