Durante las semanas del 21 al 31 de Octubre, la Fundación Melassa fue invitada especial del Centro Latino de Artes y Culturas de la Universidad de Rutgers, New Brunswick. Representando a Melassa fueron tres personas, Karin Weyland, la directora, Carlos Rutiner, el relacionista público y asesor técnico durante el Tour y Johanny Moreno, representante de los jóvenes de la comunidad de Mata De Los Indios, Villa Mella. Melassa presentó el documental "Congo P'a Tí: Identidad Afro-latina en la cultura dominicana" en ocho universidades en cuatro estados diferentes, con el fin de promover el trabajo de la institución y crear diálogo sobre la historia y la política contemporánea racial en la República Dominicana. En cada universidad y/o centro cultural nos recibieron con entusiasmo audiencias de varias edades e identidades culturales, entre ellos, afro-americanos/as, dominicanos/as, latinos/as, y norteamericanos/as, lo que propició el diálogo entre los estudiantes, profesores y participantes allí presentes.

Durante la exhibición se presentó un grupo de bomba y plena
puertorriqueña, alegrando el ambiente con música, baile y comida
latina.

During the weeks of October 21 to 31, the Melassa Foundation was a special guest of the Center for Latino Arts and Culture at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Representing Melassa were three persons, Karin Weyland, Director, Carlos Rutiner, Public Relations Director and Technical Advisor during the tour, and Johanny Moreno, representative of the youth of the community of Mata De Los Indios in Villa Mella. Melassa presented the documentary "Congo P'a Tí: Afro-Latino Identity in Dominincan Culture" in eight universities in four different states, in order to promote the work of the institution and to create a dialogue about the history and the contemporary racial politics of the Dominican Republic. In each university and/or cultural center we were received with enthusiasm by audiences of various ages and cultural identities, among them, African-Americans, Dominicans, Latinos, and North Americans, which facilitated the dialogue between the students, professors and participants present.
The Center for Latino Arts and Culture opened
the presentation of the video along with an exhibition of black and white
photographs by sociologist and Director of Melassa, Karin Weyland.
During the exhibition, a Puerto Rican folk music group of bomba and plenawas presented, enlivening the atmosphere with music, dance,
and Latin food.

El Museo del Barrio, New York. We met with some
participants from the 6th Conference of Puerto Rican Studies to do a tour
of El Museo del Barrio. Among them were Jennifer Cannon and Agustin
Lao-Montes, both founding members of Melassa that were chosen for their contributions
to the ideas that founded the Melassa community project, on the basis of the
pro-Latino work that was created in conjunction with the University of Massachusetts
and the Five Colleges of Amherst Area and in the community of Holyoke, Massachusetts,
the second largest Puerto Rican community in Massachusetts during the the
years of 2001-2002
