En colaboración con la Colectiva de Mujer, la Red Dominicana de Periodistas con Perspectiva de Género, el Grupo de Abogacía por los Derechos de las Mujeres, la Junta de Vecinos y la Fundación Cofradía de los Congos del Espíritu Santo, se organizó una serie de eventos alrededor del tema de la no violencia con la finalidad de convertir a Mata Los Indios en una "comunidad solidaria contra la violencia". Esta idea surge del Grupo de Abogacía con el interés de acompañar a las mujeres violentadas y de promover la popularización del trabajo tendiente a sensibilizar al total de la comunidad.  También surge de la necesidad de intervenir en la comunidad de Mata los Indios luego del asesinato de Trina ocurrido en esa comunidad en Junio.  La muerte de Trina generó una sensación de inseguridad y vulnerabilidad entre las mujeres y en la comunidad en general.

In collaboration with the Women's Colective, The Dominican Journalists' Network with a Gender Perspective, the Advocate Group for Women's Rights, the Neighborhood's Association and the Foundation of the Congos of the Holy Spirit, a series of events were organized around the theme of violance with the goal of transforming Mata Los Indios into a "community of solidarity against violence."  This idea evolves from the Advocate Group with the interest of accompanying women victims of abuse and of promoting the popularization of strategies that would sensibilize the community as a whole.  It is also born in the need to intervene in the community of Mata Los Indios after the murder of Trina in this community in June.  Trina's death generated a feeling of insecurity and vulnerability amongst women and in the community in general.

En una de las reuniones, Germania Galván, directora de la Colectiva de Mujer, compartió con el grupo la cifra de mujeres violentadas en República Dominicana: En 2001, 87 mujeres fueron asesinadas por sus maridos y en los primeros tres meses del 2002, 30 mujeres fueron asesinadas, o sea 1 mujer muere cada cuatro días.  En el mundo 3.5 millones de mujeres mueren a causa de la violencia.

In one of the meetings, Germana Galván, director of the Women's Colective, shared with the group the number of women victims of abuse in the Dominican Republic: In 2001, 87 women were murdered by their husbands and in the first three months of this year (2002), thirty women were murdered, that is, 1 woman dies every four days.  In the world, 3.5 million women die because of violence.

María Altagracia Valdez, de la Secretaría de la Mujer, nos habló sobre las causas, consecuencias y manifestaciones de la violencia, y nos habló de la Ley 2497 que protege a las mujeres y a las familias.  La comunidad compartió también su opinión sobre algunos de los motivos que genera la violencia, entre ellos, falta de comprensión, indiferencia, falta de organización familiar y de la comunidad, pobreza (falta de servicios), falta de comunicación, y falta de espacios para jóvenes recrearse.

María Altagracia Valdez, from the Women's Secretary of State, talked to us about the causes, consequences and manifestacions of violence, and told us about Law 2497 which protects women and families.  The community shared its opinion on some of the causes that generate violence such as lack of comprehension, indeference, lack of family and community organization, poverty (lack of services), lack of communication, and lack of recreational spaces for young people.

En la segunda reunión, la comunidad organizó un comité que se va a encargar de organizar las próximas reuniones y actividades, y de hablar con el Intendente de la Policía que había asistido a la primera reunión para asegurar una mejor vigilancia de la comunidad por parte de la policía y una mejor colaboración en general.

On the second meeting, the community organized a comittee which will organize the next meetings and activities, and will talk with the General Chief of Police who had attended the first meeting to make sure that there is more police rounds in the community, and to assure more collaboration with the community in general.

Finalmente, se hicieron dos actividades, una fue colgar trapitos de colores en una soga de colgar ropa. Cada color indicaba un nivel de violencia que alguien habia sido testigo en la comunidad.  En otra ocasión, Digna Reyes de la Colectiva de Mujer y Karin Weyland de Melassa organizaron una actividad con los niñ@s de la comunidad para que pintaran sus casas cuando todo estaba bien y cuando todo estaba mal.  El comité piensa invitar a una psicóloga en un futuro para estudiar los dibujos y compartir los resultados con las familias de los niñ@s.

Finally, two activities too place, one was to hang up colored clothes in a rope for hanging clothes to dry.  Each color represented a different level of violence somebody in the community had witnessed.  In a different occasion, Digna Reyes from the Women's Colective, and Karin Weyland from Melassa, organized an activity with the kids so that they could explore in painting their homes when everything was fine and their homes when things were not so good. The committee will invite a psychologist in the future to study the drawings and share the results with the kids' families.
