La Fundación Melassa junto con la Escuela Básica de Mata de los Indios realizaron un Concurso de Lectura para culminar la fase 3 del Proyecto de la Biblioteca en dicha escuela.  Para tal concurso las pasantes de Melassa que venían trabajando con los estudiantes en dicho proyecto hicieron un sorteo para escoger al azar 3 estudiantes de cada grado.  Para evaluar a los estudiantes el día del concurso se dividieron a  los estudiantes en dos grandes grupos, en el primer grupo estaban los estudiantes de los grados Quintos (5º) y Sextos (6º)  y en el segundo grupo los estudiantes de los grados Séptimos (7º) y Octavos (8º) para un total de 33 estudiantes.

The Melassa Foundation along with the Mata de los Indios Primary School organized a Reading Competition to finish the phase 3 of the Library Project at that school.  Melassa interns who were working with the students in that project created a lottery in order to choose three students from each grade.  To evaluate the students during the competition, they were divided in two big groups.  In the first group were the students from Fifth grade (5th) and Sixth grade (6th) and the second group were the students from Seventh (7th) and Eighth (8th)  grades, a total of 33 students.
 
 

Santa Carvajal, SubDirectora de la Escuela, recibe a los estudiantes que participaron en el concurso con estas palabras:

 

"Esta es una parte muy importante de su vida que van a recordar siempre este momento tan especial, traten de relajarse un poco para que hagan lo mejor posible, véanlo como algo natural porque nosotros queremos ayudarlos. Si ustedes se ponen positivos van a sacar mejores resultados".

También explica en qué consiste el concurso, y los criterios para su evaluación: entonación, comprensión de lectura, fluidez, creatividad, y caracterización del tema.

Santa Carvajal, Sub-Director of the Mata de los Indios school welcomed the students with the following words:

 

"This is a very important part in your lives which you'll remember for ever;  it is a  special moment.  Try to relax a little for you to do your best, try to be natural so that we can help you.  If you are positive, you will obtain better results"

She also explained the competition and the criteria for its evaluation: intonation, reading comprehension, fluency, creativity and theme caracterization.
 
 

Para los grados Quintos y Sextos utilizamos el libro "Gatos que rugen",  escrito por Kimberly Weinberger referente a los animales salvajes,  haciendo énfasis en los felinos.  Para los grados Séptimos y Octavos utilizamos el libro "La telaraña de Carlota",  escrito por E.B. White basada en la historia de una araña que quería ayudar a salvar a Wilbur, un cerdito que nació pequeño y por cuya razón el dueño quería matarlo.

In Fifth and Sixth  grades,  we used the book  "Cats that roar ",   written by  Kimberly Weinberger.  It is about wild animals especially about felines.
In  Seventh and Eighth grades,  we used the book "The Charlotte's web", written by E.B. White. It is about a spider wanted to save Wilbur, a piggly who was born small and whose owner wanted to kill for this reason.
 
 

En la evaluación se tuvo en cuenta la edad de los niños/as dentro de los diferentes grados,  se realizaron preguntas de comprensión de lectura, como también para apreciar el mundo de su creatividad e imaginación de el/la niño/a, entre otras cosas.  Pudimos notar la falta del hábito de la lectura y la importancia de inculcar en los/las estudiantes este hábito.  Al finalizar la participación de los estudiantes de ambos grupos se entregaron premios equivalentes a los mejores puntajes como también a los demás participantes por su esfuerzo.  Todos tuvieron un obsequio por lo tanto afloró la alegría y el contento de todos.  Algunos también recibieron un certificado por sus habilidades.

In the evaluation we took into account the children's age with respect to grade, and the evaluators asked questions about reading comprehension, and promped for their creativity among other things.  We could see the need for students to develop the habit of reading and the importance of inculcating this habit in the students.  Finally,  the students who obtained the best score received a gift, as well as the other students for their effort, so everyone happy.  Some of them also received a certificate for their different abilities.

"...es un gran aporte a la Escuela básica de Mata de los Indios,  de seguro que se está sembrando la semilla que luego esperaremos cosechar y que el país se va a beneficiar.  Quiero darle las gracias a la Fundación Melassa y a las pasantes por la estadía de estos meses de aporte y colaboración con la Escuela;  les agradecemos y esperamos que les vaya bien y que sigan aportando a su país y otros países".

At the end of the afternoon, the sub-director exclaimed that the contest...
 

"...is a great contribution for the Mata de los Indios school, for it is planting the seed which we hope to gain later on, as well as the country is going to benefit.  I want to thank the Melassa Foundation and its interns for their stay and their collaboration and contribution throuhgout these months.  We thank them and we hope they do well and continue to help
their country and other countries ".

Los estudiantes agradecieron a las pasantes, a la Fundación Melassa por la dedicación que tuvieron con ellos y por darles la oportunidad de participar en el concurso.  Como dicen:

"Con ustedes aprendí algo más y puedo confiar en ustedes",
"Gracias por la oportunidad que nos han dado a nosotros y a la Escuela para poder demostrar que nosotros podemos superarnos. Es muy importante para nosotros saber que nos toman en cuenta".

Los estudiantes opinaron sobre el trabajo con las pasantes durante el año escolar:

“Hemos aprendido con Lindsay, Sophia y Deanna a leer y a escribir mejor". "Lo que más me ha gustado trabajar con ellas en la biblioteca es leer, escribir y pintar".

Lourdes Lucero, maestra de la Escuela nos dice:

“Karin Weyland, Presidente de la Fundación Melassa, cumplió un sueño que yo quería hacer realidad, aunque no lo realicé yo,  veo hecho realidad mi sueño y cumplido.”

Después del concurso, Karin Weyland les agradeció a las pasantes por su labor en la escuela, y ellas concluyeron con algunas palabras de despedida sobre su estadía:

After the contest, Karin Weyland thanked the Interns for their work at the school, and they concluded with a few farewell words regarding their work:

"En el concurso de lectura todos participamos con gran entusiasmo porque esta actividad promueve el amor a la lectura,  ya que "hacer libros no tiene fin" dijo un gran sabio de la antiguedad.   Leemos para aprender,  para entretenernos,  y al leer viajamos a lugares que tal vez jamás podremos estar físicamente.  Consideramos que concursos como éste,  abren las puertas al estudiante,  no sólo para leer,  sino para poder participar en el buen principio del aprendizaje y entrenamiento necesario en la vida.   Estos concursos motivan tanto a los estudiantes como a los profesores.  A nuestro entender,  consideramos que esta actividad fue muy buena y motivadora,  y por eso esperamos que se lleven a cabo de manera continua,  ya que este tipo de trabajo tiene que ver con el adelanto de nuestra sociedad que,  muchas veces los mismos avances tecnológicos hacen desaparecer un buen hábito de lectura.  Además creemos que ayuda a nuestra comunidad educativa en su desarrollo y crecimiento personal.   Por esta razón, pensamos en su continuidad y que otros planteles escolares también puedan apreciar estos concursos.  Por último queremos agregar que sentimos una gran satisfacción de haber formado parte del jurado examinador y que estamos abiertas a este tipo de trabajo,  por lo cual decimos que la Fundación Melassa ha llenado nuestras expectativas con su valiosa contribución  a través de las múltiples ayudas que nos han otorgado (Biblioteca, Laboratorio de Informática, etc).

"In this reading competition everybody participated with great entusiasm because this activity   love for reading,  "Do books don't have to  end" said a  old age.   We read to learn, to know,  so we travel to other places may be we wouldn't be.   We consider that competitions like this opens the doors for students,  it isn't only  to read  to participate in good way knowledge and necesary trining in life.  These competitions motivate students and teachers.   Our point of view,  we think that this activity was very good and  motivater, we hope these organize frequently.  This kind of work is relationed with advance our society and  same tecnological advances do desappear a good reading habit,  many times.  We also  believe this helps our community in its development and personal growing.  For this reason we think in continuity and other schools can see these competitions.   In conclusion,  we want to say that feel a great satisfaction we had been members of jury and we are dispose for this kind of work.  The Melassa Foundation has filled our expectatives with its value contribution trough different ways of helping  (i.e. Library,  Computer Lab. etc ).
