Hace cuatro años
consecutivos, los/as estudiantes de Boston College hacen servicio comunitario
en la República Dominicana a través del programa de Melassa,
el cual les provee de transporte, alojamiento, comidas y toda la logística
de encuentros y visitas para que los/as estudiantes puedan compartir en diferentes
instituciones educacionales del país, entre ellas el Orfanato de
Villa Bendición, el Comedor Infantil de ADASEC en la comunidad de
Palavé, la Escuela de Mata de Los Indios en Villa Mella, y la escuela
modelo Mi Colegio. / For four consecutive years, students from Boston College
have realized community service in the Dominican Republic through Melassa´s
program that provides them with transportation, lodging, food and covers
all the logistics for the meetings and community visits organized by us so
that they can share and learn from the different educational institutions
in the country, such as the Villa Bendición Orphanage, the ADASEC´s
Children Food Kitchen, the School of Mata de Los Indios, and a model school,
Mi Colegio.

Encuentro con el Subsecreatario de Educación/Meeting with the Subsecretary
of State of Education
A su llegada,
los/as estudiantes se reunieron con la nueva directora de Melassa, Rosa Martinez,
la asistente administrativa, Marilyn Brazoban, y Karin Weyland, la presidenta
de Melassa para una orientación. / Upon their arrival, students gathered
for an orientation meeting with Rosa Martinez, the new director, Marilyn
Brazoban, administrative assistant, and Melassa´s president, Karin
Weyland.
En el transcurso de la
semana, los/as estudiantes se reunieron con el Subsecretario de la Secretaría
de Educación, los coordinadores de los diferentes programas de la
Secretaría y algunos/as maestros/as quiénes compartieron sus
ideas sobre el sistema de educación dominicana, principalmente enfocándose
en los retos a enfrentar en una sociedad cada vez más globalizada.
Según indicó el Subsecretario, el nuevo gobierno de Leonel
Fernández le ha dado énfasis a un enfoque de planificación
integral, comenzando desde la integración de las comunidades y organizaciones
de la sociedad civil a Comités que incidan en la educación
del país a través de encuentros locales, regionales y nacionales
de los diferentes actores que componen la comunidad escolar, además
de las escuelas e institutos superiores. / Throughout the week, students
had a meeting with the Subsecretary of the Secretary of State of Education,
the coordinators of the different programs run by the Secretary and some
teachers who shared their ideas about the dominican educational system, focusing
particularly on the challenges brought about by an ever increasing global
society. According to the Subsecretary, the new government of Leonel
Fernández has emphasized an integral perspective on the organizing
aspect of education, beginning with the incorporation of communities and organizations
from civil society, divided up in committees that would have an impact on
the education of the country through local, regional and national gatherings
composed of these social actors and those that compose the educational community
such as schools and higher learning institutions.
Los/as estudiantes
prepararon diferentes dinámicas para compartir con los/as niños/as
de Villa Bendición sobre temas de higiene, aprendizaje, deportes y
otros temas interesantes / Students prepare differente workshops to share
with the children of Villa Bendición regarding hygiene, learning,
sports, and other interesting things.

Los/as estudiantes
visitan la Oficina de Melassa en San Felipe de Villa Mella, y la Escuela
de Mata de Los Indios donde comparten con los/as profesores y estudiantes
en los salones de clase. / Students visit Melassa´s Office
in San Felipe de Villa Mella and the School of Mata de Los Indios where they
share with teachers and students in their classroom.
Luego fuimos a visitar
la Cofradía de los Congos de Villa Mella donde los/as estudiantes aprendieron
a bailar la música Congo y Sixto Minier, el Capitán de la Cofradía
les habló de la tradición del Espíritu Santo y los rituales
afro-descendientes. / Afterwards we visited the Brotherhood of the Congos
of Villa Mella where students learned how to dance Congo music, and Sixto
Minier, the Brotherhood´s Captain talked about the tradition of the
Holy Spirit and afro-descendant rituals.

Los/as estudiantes
visitaron la Escuela Mi Colegio en el ensanche quisqueya, una escuela de
clase media-alta, bilingue con muchos recursos para el disfrute y aprendizaje
de los/as estudiantes del sistema privado cuyas familias pueden pagar hasta
$300 dólares mensuales. / Students visited the School Mi Colegio
at the Ensanche Quisqueya, a upper-middle class school, bilingual, and equipped
with many resources. Students whose families can afford to pay $300
dollars monthly can enjoy such privilege.

their customs with much pride.

Villa Vella Culture / La cultura de
Villa Mella
Luego de ver el
documental realizado por Melassa, "Congo Pa´Ti: identidad afro-latina
en la cultura dominicana", los/as estudiantes tuvieron una charla con la
presidenta de Melassa, Karin Weyland sobre la cultura, identidad y migración
dominicana, con una perspectiva de género. Karin Weyland es autora
del libro, Negociando la aldea global con un pie aquí y otro allá:
La diáspora femenina dominicana y la transculturalidad como alternativa
descolonizador. / After watching the video, "Congo For You:
afro-latina identity in dominican culture", students gathered to dialogue
with Karin Weyland, president of Melassa and author of the book, Negotiating
the global village with a foot here and the other one there: Dominican Women´s
diaspora and transculturation as a decolonizing alternative. They
covered issues of culture, identity and women´s migration.
Visita al Batey
de Palavé, una comunidad domínico-haitiana donde las condiciones
de vida de los/as migrantes domínico-haitianos/as son muy escasas,
enfrentando problemas de agua, luz, falta de empleos, entre otros.
Los/as estudiantes visitaron el Comedor Infantil de ADASEC donde 50 niños/as
comen allí diariamente. Los-as niños-as compatieron con
los/as estudiantes algunas dinámicas de dibujos y cantos. En
conmemoración del día internacional de la mujer, le ayudaron
a los/as niños/as a hacer tarjetas para una mujer que ellos/as admiraran,
casi todos-as eligieron a su mamá. / Visit to the
Palavé Batey, a dominican-haitian community where living conditions
for migrants of this community is scarce, facing problems with regards to
electrical and water supply, lack of employment , among others. Students
visited the ADASEC Children´s Food Kitchen where fifty kids eat on
a day-to-day basis, and the students shared with the kids some drawing and
singing sessions. In commemmoration of the international women´s
day, they helped the kids to make cards for a woman they admire in their lives,
most kids selected their mothers.
