La obra es una
adaptación de la novela que tiene el mismo nombre de la periodista
Altagracia Moreta Féliz quien estuvo presente en el Teatro y le dirigió
unas palabras al público sobre la importancia del mensaje de la obra
sobre el cuidado del medio ambiente y la valorización de la cultura
dominicana. La autora de la novela también comentó que
ella jamás imaginaba que un grupo tan talentoso como el grupo de
Melassa llevaría el mensaje de una forma tan bonita y tan entretenida.
La obra consiste además de seis bailes folklóricos,
entre ellos el Congo, el merengue, la Salve, y otras músicas del
carnaval. / The play was adapted from the novel that has the same
name by journalist Altagracia Moreta Feliz who was present at the event and
gave a few words of introduction explaining the importance of the message
of the play about preserving the environment and the valorization of Dominican
culture. The author of the novel also commented that she never imagined
that a group of such talent youth would bring her message in such a beautiful
and entertaining way. The play also has six folk dances, including
Congo, merengue, Salve and other carnival music.

El personaje
del duende es la conciencia del planeta quien nos recuerda el estado deteriorado
en que se encuentra nuestro planeta Tierra. Nos recuerda del amor
y la cooperación entre las personas en vez de enfocarnos en el odio,
la codicia y la ambición. / The character of the elf is the consciousness
of the planet who reminds us of the deteriorating status of the earth. She
also reminds us of the possibility of creating love and cooperation amongst
people instead of focusing on hate and ambition.
La familia
campesina, Los Galíndez demuestran los valores de unidad y solidaridad
de las personas del pueblo del Eslabón Perdido donde se desarrolla
la trama. El misterio del caballo de Galíndez altera a las
chismosas del pueblo cuando el caballo comienza a volar por la pradera.
La superstición y el drama aumentan en el pueblo a tal punto
que tienen que llamar a la anciana sabia del pueblo quien convoca al Consejo
de Ancianos y Ancianas y ellos-as deciden invitar a los científicos
Johnson y Samurai de Estados Unidos y el Japón ya que el gobierno
no responde a sus reclamos./ The family from the country-side, The
Galíndez, show us such values as unity and solidarity amongst the
people of the Lost Step Town where the events take place. The mystery
of Galíndez´horse reaches the women who like to gossip when
the horse begins to fly over the prairie. Superstition and drama increase
in town to the point the wise old lady is called, and she decided to gather
the Council of Older Men and Women who invite scientists Johnson and Samurai
from the United States and Japan respectively since local government is
deaf to their claims.
Los cientificos,
Johnson y Samurai investigan los acontecimientos misteriosos alrededor de
la conversión del caballo en un hermoso pegaso con alas. Desean
llevárselo a Estados Unidos para seguir la investigación pero
Galíndez no quiere perder a su caballo ni aun por todo el oro del
mundo. Los-as ancianos-as del pueblo predicen un eclipse solar y los
científicos se quedan impresionados por la sabiduría del pueblo
y sus leyendas, cambiando la idea original que tenían de estos y lo
que ellos creian eran supersticiones. Los científicos finalmente
descubren que los cambios del caballo se deben a un grupo de jóvenes
extraterrestres que están investigando la fauna y flora del pueblo
porque allí es el único lugar del planeta donde predomina el
amor y la cooperación con la naturaleza. Poco a poco van elmininando
la contaminación, ayudando a la humanidad a vivir en un ambiente sano
y equilibrado. Sin que los demás extraterrestres se enteren,
el marciano travieso deja unos hongos que come el caballo y se convierte
en un pegaso el cual atraviesa el eclipse llevándose al Señor
Galíndez. / Scientists Johnson and Samurai research the mysterious
happenings surrounding the transformation of Galíndez horse into a
pegasus with beautiful wings. They wish they could take it to the United
States to continue their research but Galíndez is too proud to give
up his horse, not even for the lots of gold. The Elders´ Council
predict a solar eclipse and scientists are impressed with their wisdom and
their legends, changing their first impresssion and what they thought to
be elders´superstitions. Finally the scientists discovered that
the changes in the horse were caused by a group of young aliens who were
doing research in town because the Lost Step was the only place where people
still have love for nature. Slowly they begin to eliminate contamination
from the Planet, helping to restore the balance teaching humans to live in
a heahtly environment. Without the other aliens knowing, there is one
who leaves mushrooms behind for the horse to eat, becoming a beautiful pegasus
who flyes away during the solar eclipse taking Galíndez with him.
Los extraterrestres

un ambiente sano y balanceado. El encuentro entre los extraterrestres
y los científicos / Aliens doing research in the Planet, helping
humanity to live a healthier and more balanced life. The scientits
meet the aliens.

Durante la
visita a la Ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros, la Fundación Melassa
aprovechó para llevar al grupo de jóvenes a una visita guiada
de uno de los centros culturales más importantes del país,
donde tienen varias exhibiciones de arte sobre la identidad caribeña.
/ During the visit to the City of Santiago de los Caballeros,
the Melassa Foundation made it possible to arrange a guided visit to one
of the most important cultural centers of the country where they have several
art exhibits on Caribbean culture.
Ensayos
en la Escuela de Mata de Los Indios antes de la obra y visita de dos estudiantes
de la Universidad de California, Long Beach / Rehearsals at the Mata de
Los Indios School before the play and visit by two students from the University
of California, Long Beach.
Semanas antes
del evento los-as jóvenes de Melassa se reunieron varias veces en
la Escuela de Mata de Los Indios para ensayar con la presidenta de la Fundación
Karin Weyland. Durante los ensayos nos visitaron dos estudiantes universitarias
de la Universidad de Long Beach, California. / Weeks before the event,
Melassa youth gathered with the president of the Foundation, Karin Weyland
to rehearse several times at the School of Mata de Los Indios. During
the rehearsals two students from the University of Long Beach California
visited us.

Durante los ensayos, el grupo de baile y teatro se dividió en pequeños grupos para armar una nueva obra sobre las raíces dominicanas. Cada grupo tiene que investigar sobre diferentes personajes de la historia dominicana para representar diferentes aspectos de su vida, entre ellos, Enriquillo y Anacaona, la Cofradia de los Congos del Espiritu Santo, el grupo de Salve, Mama Tingó, y el cimarrón Lemba. Cada grupo está coordinado por una líder portadora de la cultura del grupo de baile, y Marilyn Brazobán y Juana Doñe Solane coordinan a las líderes / On the last rehearsal, the group divived itself in smaller groups to put together a new play regarding Dominican cultural roots. The group is researching on Dominican characters to perform different aspects of their lives, including Enriquillo and Anacaona, the Brotherhood of the Congos of the Holy Spirit, The Salve group, Mama Tingó and Lemba, the runaway slave. Each group is coordinated by a leader from the dance group, and the leaders are coordinated by Marilyn Brazobán and Juana Doñe Solano.
