As part of the Research and Visual Documentation Program, Karin Weyland coordinated a workshop in Mata Los Indios in order to teach the use of video and photo cameras, and address the issue of representation from a practical and theoretical perspective.  The participants of the Hip Hop workshop joined this group and learned how to interview people.  During the visit of the International Delegation, the girls formed four different groups and had the chance to practice what they had learned, documenting the activities of the Delegation and doing four interviews with members of their community, Sixto Minier, Enerolisa Nuñez, Pío Brazoban, and Vitalina Nolasco.  They also participated in the interviews of Carlos Hernández Soto, José Guerrero, Father Tony, and other people outside their community.  During the visit of the Delegation, documentarian Leo Silverio, who graduated from the University of Santo in Communication, gave a talk about professional ethics and image manipulation, and local artist Cecilia Casamajor gave a painting and collage Workshop so that the girls could create a photo mural with the photographs they had taken about their community.  The murals are in exhibit at the Museum of the Brotherhood of the Congos of the Holy Spirit.

Como parte del Programa de Investigación y Documentación Visual, Karin Weyland coordinó un taller en Mata Los Indios para enseñar el uso de cámaras de fotografía y video y para tratar el tema de la representación de una forma práctica y teórica a la vez.  Las mismas participantes del Taller de Hip Hop se unieron a éste Taller y aprendieron a realizar entrevistas.  Durante la visita de la Delegación Internacional, el Taller se dividio en grupos de cuatro y las participantes pudieron poner en práctica lo aprendido, documentando las actividades de la delegación y entrevistando a cuatro miembr@s de la comunidad, Sixto Minier, Enerolisa Nuñez, Pío Brazoban, y Vitalina Nolasco.  También participaron en las entrevistas de Carlos Hernández Soto, José Guerrero, el Padre Tony y otras personas fuera de la comunidad.  Durante la visita de la Delegación, documentalista Leo Silverio, graduado de la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo en el Programa de Comunicación, dio una charla sobre la ética profesional y la manipulación de la imagen, y la artista local Cecilia Casamajor dio un Taller de pintura y collage para que las chicas puedan crear un mural de fotos con las fotografías que ellas mismas habían sacado de su comunidad.  Los murales se están exhibiendo en el Museo de la Cofradía de los Congos del Espíritu Santo.

Elizabeth Press, Northamerican student with a Fulbright fellowship, visited us in April to show us a cut of the documentary she is producing with a group of young people from the Limón community in San José de Ocoa.  We had a great discussion on the diferent stories one can tell about one's community.  The workshop participants had documented many of the different events happening in their community, such as the Ninth Day Prayers and the Annual Festivity of the Holy Spirit, and therefore the discussion helped to conceptualize the usage of images representing one's community and social reality and their impact on other people.

Elizabeth Press, estudiante norteamericana con una beca de la Fulbright, nos visitó en Abril para mostrarnos una parte del documental que ella está realizando con un grupo de jóvenes de la comunidad de Limón, San José de Ocoa.  Tuvimos una discusión muy productiva sobre las diferentes historias que uno puede contar sobre su comunidad.  Las participantes del Taller habían grabado diferentes eventos en su comunidad, como los Rezos de los nueve días y la Fiesta Anual del Espíritu Santo, y entonces la discusión nos ayudó a conceptualizar el uso de imágenes y el impacto que puede tener la representación de nuestras culturas y realidades sociales en otra gente.

In the second phase of the workshop, we are selecting the documented material and editing the order of images in order to create a story.  During this process, the girls have worked in Melassa's computers, learning how to use the video-editing program, and the Internet, in particular the handling of images for the video and the making of Melassa's Web Page.

En la segunda etapa de Taller se está seleccionando el material grabado y editando el orden de las imágenes para armar la historia del documental.  Durante este proceso, las chicas han trabajado en las computadoras de Melassa, aprendiendo a usar el programa de editar videos y la Internet, en lo concerniente al manejo de imágenes para el video y para la Página Web de Melassa.
